My mother recently passed away and I had an unusual situation because I wanted to do a home funeral and burial and to do the transport, viewing, and burial of her body myself. We dug our own grave and placed her body (only wrapped in a thin cotton shroud) directly in the earth. This was a very beautiful, intimate, and eco-friendly way to do a burial. However, his type of burial is highly unusual and unsupported in our culture and it took some know how to be able to do it. I was very fortunate to be connected with a Deborah Threadgill of Threadgill's Memorial Services of Portland. I wouldn't have known how to proceed without her kind support, advocacy, and clear knowledge of the legalities and logistics necessary for such a process. Threadgill was recommended to us by Hopewell House when my father passed away in May. Debra met with me at our home and made a very emotional difficult situation very manageable. She explained everything and walked me through the process and decisions that needed to be made. She was professional and sympathetic. Then in November, my mother had passed away.
